Back of the frame

At SE1 Picture Frames we use a range of boards for the back of the frame depending on the specifics of the project. Art-bak Conservation is our standard backing board and is used for the majority of our framing jobs. Art-bak Conservation board is an excellent material for the back of the frame as it benefits from a unique curve in the board, which will keep your artwork flatter in the frame, furthermore the board has a water resistant membrane and a conservation grade white barrier paper which faces the artwork.

For extra support, on larger frames we use foam core board which is very rigid and light weight. We also use a range of MDF, hardboard and fluted boards depending on the job. The backboard is then pinned in place and sealed with gummed paper or self adhesive tapes that keeps the framing pins in place and prevents dust from entering the frame.

If the frame is large (above 110cm x 110cm on a thin moulding) then we support it with a sub-frame. This is a frame that sits tightly inside the rebate of the main frame  and prevents any twisting or bowing of the frame and keeps the frame rigid.

When it comes to hinging there are a number of options including: D rings and chord, strap hangers, mirror plates, security fittings, cleats and split batons.
